Joseph Petric
Concert Accordionist

About Me

Toronto based accordionist Joseph Petric has reached out to audiences since 1986, touring with Columbia Artists, Jeunesses Musicales, Debut Atlantic, and England’s John Lewis Partnership, among others. A mainstay of CBC programming, London’s Grammophone found his performance elaborate, riveting…impressively played. The Winnipeg Free Press heard a magic carpet rid to mysterious places…miraculous, and the New York Times reported…a strong, committed.. particularily memorable interpretation of the Berio Accordion Sequenza. He shares his passion for the accordion in school concerts and community outreach as well as giving master classes, recitals and lectures. Laureate of the BBC3 Radio and CBC National Radio Auditions, JUNO and Prix Opus winner, the first instrumentalist recipient of the Friend of Canadian Music Award, and designated Ambassador of Canadian Music on the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Music Centre 2009. His concerto-led career has enjoyed the financial support of entities such as the Koussevitsky Foundation, the OAC and the Canada Council for the Arts. His 230 commissions have significantly enhanced the canon including 12 concertos. Joseph has a discography of 30 CD titles and is currently preparing a manuscript for publication dealing with the artistic reconstruction of the accordion 1828 to 2010.

My Philosophy ...

The accordion is a unique musical language shaped by its own sociological realities.

In a modern concert world this language invites an exploration of the ironic and subversive qualities of the accordion as an artistic medium. It also provides the artist with a wellspring of artistic material and leads to alternate values in a new concert art.

Audiences provide much needed validation for a work of art. They experience their own artistic satisfactions as they interpret a work of art according to their own gifts and abilities.

My work, which ranges from traditional Classical texts, soundstage electronica, concertos, music theatre and inter-disciplinary performances, respects this process of validation - a process dynamic with triggers, memories and artistic permissions in a new performance art. Here music is a metaphor, the accordion a story, and audiences delight in the combination of the old, the new, and the unexpected.

“I love my audiences to experience a sense of the poetic at the final note of a performance.” – Joseph Petric
